lady attended the memorial service. he was the first japanese american elected to both houses of congress and the second largest serving u.s. senator. he was 88 years old. >> back here in maryland a police shooting in baltimore county, a police officer opened fire, killing a man who had a knife. that's where derrick is tonight with the details. >> reporter: police say the officer was acting in self- defense when he confronted and shot a suspicious man he found back here behind this gas station. it all started with an officer on routine patrol as he passed the shell gas station at ed monton around 3:45 in the morning. he noticed a suspicious man behind the building. police say when the officer asked the man to come out from behind the building, the man pulled out a knife. >> the officer attempted to use a taser to stop the situation, but it was ineffective.

the man refused repeated commands to drop the knife. >> reporter: police say fearing for his safety, the officer shot the man to the chest. he has been identified. he died from the gunshot back here at the scene. >> you have to be crazy to go towards the cop with something. >> reporter: this neighbor robert mills moved his family out of the city to avoid crime and realized that no place is immune to crime. >> life goes on, you have to do what you have to do. if you are religious, you pray and do what you can't to stay safe. >> reporter: some of the neighbors in this irarea are wondering if the man who was shot was the same man they had been seen loitering around the area gas station. they say he appears to be mentally unstable. live in the penn hills area, derrick, belcore "wjz" "eyewitness news" >> thank you, derrick. the police have not identified

the police officer involved in it. he is on routine leave pending the outcome of the investigation >> police say a person was dead when they were pulled from the water at the world trade center this morning. the medical exaim am inner is working to determine the identity and cause of death. a former oriole discovered dead inside of his home. he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the 36-year-old who played nine games back in 2009 was acquired from the reds as a trade. he retired in 2009 and most recently worked for an organization that helped to develop young baseball players >> ravens delivered an early christmas present to fans. reaction from the much-needed victory. >> reporter: after three troubling losses in a row, all is now well with the ravens

days before christmas, a wrong way crash in ohio claims four lives, including a seven- year-old boy. police say the wrong way driver made a u-turn on the highway an crashed into a van carrying a family of six. the wrong way driver and her son died. the woman driving the van an the man in the passenger seat also died. the family was driving to visit relatives for the holidays. alcohol may have been a factor. >> >> a moment of sheer terror for any mother, seeing her child rolling in a shopping cart. check it out on videotape. a police officer was on patrol, he saw the child in the yellow cart speeding away, a few feet away from the highway and the officer rushed into action. >> my immediate reaction, he was traveling fast, i knew there was not an option to stop the cart, but i had to do something to try to stop traffic because it was heading

out there. we do have the first of a couple of storms moving our way, tomorrow. tomorrow is not a big one. we'll get to that in a moment. >> it's messy. >> it's messy. today, beautiful day out there, we topped out in the 40s, average is 43, dropping pretty quickly. now, now, we are also dropping. 40 degrees in ocean city. not much of a wind out there. we have lost that, today as the sunset returned, but all of that will be changing. clouds coming back in because of this next storm system moverring our way. i want to point out there is another one already making its way to the west coast, a lot of mountain snow. excuse me. that will be factoring into our forecast. we'll get to that in a moment. first up, the first one coming our way. tomorrow, it will break out with precipitation an i use a

broad term because it will be a mix for some of us before changing over to rain. this is a rain event. out west in the mountains, we do have a freezing rain advisory that goes into effect at 5:00 am, continuing to 1:00 p.m. this is a section of allegheny county, a winter weather advisory for the same times. for the rest of us who see a sleet snow mix, it will change over to rain and the amounts will not be heavy with this storm. it's a light one and gets out of here for tuesday, sunshine returning christmas day. wednesday, the next storm comes our way. clouds come in. this one will be bigger. probably going to cause more disruption as we head wednesday into thursday. you see that mixed zone right over maryland something we do need to watch and the third one will come our way next weekend. the holidays have arrived, so has the stormy weather. on the waters, east wind, 5-10 knots. we'll probably see some fog.
